Award-winning social & environmental sustainability.
Commissioned by the charity Reach Learning Disability in Southwell, the project helps to address the national shortage of supportive housing for adults with learning disabilities. It provides not just a home, but the chance for its residents to remain close to their communities, maintaining the relationships that matter most - with friends, with family, with the people who have been part of their lives for years.
The accommodation comprises 12 ensuite bedrooms, each with a patio or balcony, along with communal living spaces and kitchens, assisted bathroom facilities, and two bedrooms for carers.
Through careful design, the building achieves Lifetime Homes quality standards and is zero carbon in operation.
With a south-facing orientation, high thermal mass, airtight construction, and balconies that offer solar shading, in cooler months the building captures the sun’s warmth whilst in warmer months it stays cool.
This fabric-first approach ensures that the buildings energy demand is reduced to an absolute minimum. Low-carbon technologies, including Photovoltaic (PV) panels and air-source heat pumps, supply the minimal energy that is required.
This is a building that not only has a low environmental impact but is also one which has low running costs. It exceeds current Building Regulations standards and the proposed Future Homes and Building Standards set for 2025.
